How to use

  1. Click or tap the large start-light panel, or use Start, to begin.
  2. Watch the five red lights illuminate one by one. Do not respond while any red lights remain on.
  3. After the final light, wait through the unpredictable hold and respond with click, tap, or Space only when all five lights go out.
  4. Complete five valid starts. Responses before lights out count as false starts and do not become valid samples.
  5. Review average, median, best, worst, false starts, local history, or save the completed result as a local share card.

What the result means

  • Each valid reaction sample runs from the browser timestamp used to trigger lights out to the click, tap, or Space response received by the page.
  • The red-light sequence and unpredictable hold are not part of the reported reaction milliseconds; they create the anticipation-control phase before the cue.
  • Lower is faster. Average is the mean of five valid reactions; Median is the middle valid result and is less affected by one unusually slow run.
  • Best and Worst show the session spread. False starts record anticipation before lights out and are excluded from the five valid samples.
  • The measured result still includes browser/rendering/display delay before you perceive lights out, plus your response, input device, operating-system/input path, and browser event delivery.
  • Compare repeated sessions using the same display, browser, input method, and similar system conditions.

Limitations

  • DeviceMetrik triggers the lights-out state inside the browser and timestamps it with performance.now(); there is no physical sensor confirming the exact instant display pixels become dark.
  • This five-light page reproduces only a browser lights-out reaction pattern. It does not reproduce a race car, clutch release, grid transponder, official gantry timing system, or the complete Formula 1 start procedure.
  • Results include human response plus display, browser, operating-system/input path, and input-device delay.
  • Refresh rate, touch vs mouse vs keyboard input, system load, browser scheduling, power saving, and display behavior can shift browser-measured results.
  • This page is unofficial and is not associated with Formula 1, FIA, any team, driver, or racing series.

Troubleshooting

False starts keep triggering
Wait until every red light is extinguished and do not anticipate the hold. Click or tap the panel, or use Start, to begin a retry.
Run aborts mid-sequence
Keep the tab focused; blur/hide interrupts the attempt.
My results change a lot between runs
Use the same display, browser, input method, and device; keep the page focused; avoid heavy background load; compare repeated five-attempt sessions; inspect Median as well as Average.

Is this an official F1 test?

No. DeviceMetrik is an independent browser-tool site. This is an unofficial start-light reaction exercise and is not approved, endorsed by, or associated with Formula 1, FIA, any team, driver, or racing series. No official logos or race assets are used.

How close is this to a real Formula 1 standing start?

FIA 2026 Sporting Regulations B5.7.2 describe a standing start signalled by five red lights: the lights illuminate sequentially with a one-second interval, then all five go out to signal the start. The time between the fifth light and lights out is at the permanent starter's discretion. DeviceMetrik uses the same one-second light cadence, but its 0.2–3.0 second hold is a DeviceMetrik-owned randomized browser practice range. This page recreates only the visual wait-and-react pattern, not a complete race start system. Read the FIA 2026 F1 Regulations, Section B Sporting, Issue 08.

How fast do Formula 1 drivers react at the start?

A Formula 1 explainer says drivers launch their cars about 0.2 seconds after lights out on average. That is race-launch context, not a browser click or tap threshold: a real launch includes clutch, accelerator, car control, and official timing, while this page includes display, browser, system, and input delay. How does DeviceMetrik time lights out?

The sequence timers illuminate the five lights. After the randomized hold, the lights-out transition is scheduled inside requestAnimationFrame; the start timestamp uses performance.now(), and the response timestamp uses performance.now() when the page handles click, tap, or Space. The difference becomes the reaction sample, but physical display onset is not sensor-confirmed.

How is this different from the standard Reaction Time Test?

The standard Reaction Time Test waits for a simple green visual cue. Formula Start Reaction Test adds five sequential warning lights, an unpredictable final hold, a lights-out cue, and false-start anticipation context. Its final value is still browser-observed visual-response timing, not a different certified biological reaction measurement.
