How to use

  1. Before Start, choose the preferred input and browser processing requests. No microphone opens when you change these controls.
  2. Click Start and respond to the browser's audio-only permission prompt. Confirm the browser-reported input and settings after capture begins.
  3. Speak at your normal distance and watch the waveform, RMS estimate, and peak estimate. These are digital dBFS readings, not calibrated sound pressure.
  4. Optionally stay quiet for the explicit 3-second baseline, or record a local sample of up to 10 seconds. Neither starts automatically.
  5. Stop and release the microphone before playing a sample or recording observations. Interrupted attempts cannot be finalized.
  6. Record at least one bounded observation, then finish the current-session check. Start clears the previous attempt and sample.

What the result means

  • A moving waveform and changing dBFS estimates show that digital samples reached this browser analysis path during the run.
  • Near-full-scale samples can indicate limited digital headroom, but the page does not automatically diagnose clipping, distortion, or hardware failure.
  • The optional quiet baseline is the median browser-relative RMS estimate during three seconds of user-declared quiet. It includes the room, device, gain, and active processing.
  • Local playback lets you listen for clarity, level, noise, distortion, or dropouts after capture stops; it does not reproduce a later call application's codec or network path.

Troubleshooting

The permission prompt does not appear
Use HTTPS in a current browser, focus this tab, and inspect the microphone permission icon or site settings. A previously blocked decision may prevent another prompt.
Permission was denied
Allow microphone access for devicemetrik.com in browser site settings, then try again. Camera permission is not needed.
No microphone is listed
Connect or enable the intended input, check the operating system input list and hardware mute control, then reload or Start again.
The waveform stays nearly flat
Confirm the browser-reported input, check the headset boom or mute switch, speak at a normal distance, and compare with operating-system input settings.
The level is high or playback sounds distorted
Move slightly farther from the microphone or lower system/interface input gain. Repeat with browser processing requests changed only if that matches the app you plan to use.
The browser-selected input differs from the preference
Stop first, choose the preferred input, and Start again. Browser or operating-system policy can still determine the final track, so use the reported setting as the result.

FAQ

Does the microphone open when this page loads?

No. The page requests audio-only capture after you press Start. Device selection and processing controls do not open a stream.

Is microphone audio uploaded or saved?

No microphone upload action exists. Live analysis stays in the browser, and an optional short sample is held by an object URL in this tab until it is replaced, the next run starts, or the page closes.

Is dBFS the loudness in my room?

No. dBFS is a browser-relative digital level derived from nominal normalized samples. Without calibrated hardware, this page cannot report dB SPL, dBA, or physical microphone sensitivity.

Why do requested and reported processing settings differ?

The checkboxes express requested constraints. The browser, operating system, driver, and input may apply a different result; the captured track's reported settings are shown separately.

Does a successful check prove the microphone is healthy?

No. It provides evidence about this browser capture path during one attempt. It cannot certify hardware, frequency response, self-noise, another application's routing, or network call quality.
