How to use
- Read the voice-safety notice, decide which comfortable registers you intend to include, and acknowledge only when ready.
- Choose the preferred microphone for the next Start. Changing this idle preference does not request media.
- Start one microphone session. An optional gentle middle-register hum can help you settle, but there is no timed warmup requirement.
- Begin the low-note check, move downward gradually, and stop before pushing, pressing, or forcing.
- Hold one comfortable low note until the live candidate is stable for at least 500 ms with confidence of at least 0.70, then accept it deliberately.
- Move upward gradually without yelling, screaming, or forcing. Accept one comfortable stable high note above the captured low.
- Review the exact captured pair. Retaking the low clears both endpoints; retaking the high preserves the low and replaces only the high.
- Finish range to freeze the observed span and release the microphone. Stop earlier if uncomfortable; that leaves an incomplete attempt, not a completed result.
- Interpret semitones and octaves as the frequency ratio between this session's accepted endpoints, not as a voice type or health result.
- If repeating later, keep the same intended register rule and a similar microphone setup so the sessions are easier to compare.
What the result means
- Captured low and high are the two comfortable, stable notes you explicitly accepted. Later live frames cannot overwrite them.
- Estimated Hz is the browser YIN estimate for each accepted endpoint. Note names and cents are frozen under twelve-tone equal temperament with A4 = 440 Hz.
- A candidate becomes eligible only when it is voiced, finite, at least 0.70 confidence, and stable for at least 500 ms. Confidence is an internal periodicity score, not calibrated accuracy.
- Semitone span is 12 × log2(high Hz ÷ low Hz); octave span is that value divided by 12.
- The result is an observed comfortable singing span in this browser session. It is not full physiological capacity, professional tessitura, voice type, vocal health, safe-technique evidence, or a singing-skill score.
- Warmup, fatigue, hydration, time of day, register scope, technique, microphone, room noise, browser processing, and how strictly you choose comfort can all change a repeat result.
- The detector analyzes 50–1,200 Hz. This is a browser-analysis band, not the complete possible human vocal range, a medical range, or a hearing range; valid sounds outside it may not be captured.
- The page does not identify chest, head, falsetto, whistle, or modal register. Decide your intended register scope before starting and apply that rule consistently.
Limitations
- Not a medical exam or professional voice-type (fach) certification.
- Do not force notes; stop on pain, hoarseness, or discomfort.
- Room acoustics, distance, background noise, microphone response, AGC, noise suppression, echo cancellation, resampling, Bluetooth profiles, and operating-system processing can affect the estimate.
- Range endpoints alone do not establish tessitura or fach; those also depend on timbre, register transitions, technique, training, repertoire, and how the notes were produced.
- This single-pitch detector does not identify registers, judge singing ability, diagnose vocal health, or prove that a technique is safe.
- A wider result is not automatically better. Do not force a note to increase the displayed span.
Troubleshooting
- Microphone permission was denied
- Allow microphone access for devicemetrik.com in browser site settings, reload if required, acknowledge the safety notice, and Start again. Camera permission is not used.
- No microphone input was found
- Connect or enable an audio input, check operating-system input settings, then reload the device list and start a new session.
- The microphone or browser analysis could not start
- Close another app using the input, choose a different microphone while idle, or try a current browser. A capture failure is not by itself proof of hardware failure.
- The wrong microphone was used
- Stop or Reset, choose the preferred microphone for the next Start, and begin a new range session. Endpoints from different streams are never combined.
- No stable pitch candidate appears
- Sustain one clear comfortable note, reduce room noise and echo, keep a consistent microphone distance, and avoid accompaniment. Use Microphone Test to inspect the input path.
- The note jumps by an octave
- Harmonics, breath noise, room reflections, or browser processing can move a single-pitch estimate. Sustain a simpler vowel at comfortable volume and wait for stability before accepting.
- A comfortable note is outside the detector
- This page only analyzes 50–1,200 Hz. A valid sound outside that implementation band may remain ineligible; do not force it into range.
- The high endpoint is rejected
- The accepted high must be above the captured low. Retake the high, or retake the low first if that endpoint no longer represents your intended comfortable pair.
- A Bluetooth or headset microphone behaves differently
- Bluetooth profiles and device processing can change bandwidth or stability. Stop, select the intended input, and repeat in a fresh session rather than mixing endpoints.
- The session stopped after switching tabs
- Hidden-page or ended-track cleanup interrupts the attempt and releases media. Return to the page and start a fresh clean session.
- The range is smaller or different on another attempt
- Warmup, fatigue, hydration, register scope, technique, room, microphone, and comfort choices vary. This does not by itself indicate a vocal problem.
- Singing causes discomfort
- Stop immediately. Do not push through pain, sudden hoarseness, dizziness, or unusual strain to obtain a result.

What is vocal range in this test?
It is the frequency span between one comfortable stable low note and one comfortable stable high note that you deliberately accept during the same microphone session.
What counts as my lowest or highest note here?
Use a repeatable, comfortably sustained note—not a pressed low, squeak, yell, or strained extreme. You decide the endpoint after the browser shows stable evidence.
How long must I hold a note?
The capture control requires at least 500 ms of detector stability and confidence of at least 0.70. You may hold it longer if comfortable.
Why won't a note become eligible?
It may be unvoiced, unstable, below the confidence gate, outside 50–1,200 Hz, or affected by room noise, harmonics, microphone processing, or an invalid analysis session.
Why did my measured range change?
Warmup, fatigue, hydration, time of day, register scope, technique, environment, microphone, and how strictly you chose comfort can all change the accepted pair.
Does this tell me my voice type or fach?
No. Range endpoints alone do not determine bass, tenor, alto, soprano, or another professional classification. Tessitura, timbre, passaggi, technique, training, and repertoire also matter.
What is the difference between vocal range and tessitura?
This page calculates the span between two selected endpoints. Tessitura is the region where a voice works comfortably and sustainably in musical use; this browser workflow does not classify it.
Does the page identify chest voice, head voice, or falsetto?
No. It estimates one dominant frequency and does not identify vocal register. Choose your intended register scope before testing and use it consistently.
Why is the detector limited to 50–1,200 Hz?
That is the analysis band used by this browser YIN detector. It bounds this implementation; it is not a claim about complete human vocal ability or hearing.
Is the result medical or evidence of vocal health?
No. Stable pitch estimates and a frequency ratio cannot diagnose vocal health, confirm safe technique, or replace a qualified clinician or voice professional.
